The Interlace House stands out for its thoughtful integration of both human and pet needs, creating a truly harmonious living environment. What makes this project particularly special is how it goes beyond just accommodating pets; it actively designs spaces that cater to their well-being and lifestyle. The open-plan layout and interconnected courtyards not only create a visually striking, light-filled home but also provide dynamic spaces for the couple’s dogs to roam, play, and relax. The design cleverly balances privacy and openness, making the home feel expansive yet secure, which is especially important for pets. By blending natural elements, sustainable practices, and pet-friendly spaces, the Interlace House enriches daily life in a way that is functional, beautiful, and inclusive.

Redefining Contemporary Living for Humans and Pets
Located in the vibrant township of Petaling Jaya, Interlace House redefines modern living by integrating the needs of both humans and pets. This two-story residence, designed for a couple and their dogs, transforms a former single-story bungalow into a contemporary sanctuary that balances elegance and functionality.

At its core, the design embraces the concept of “interlace,” where three interlocking rectangular volumes dissolve traditional boundaries, creating a harmonious flow throughout the home. These volumes form pocket courtyards that fill the interiors with natural light and ventilation while maintaining a connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. This thoughtful arrangement caters to both the couple’s and their pets’ active lifestyle.

Materiality and Craftsmanship:
Interlace House showcases craftsmanship and local materials. The ground floor features polished concrete flooring, a durable and sophisticated finish installed by skilled local labor. The exterior walls have a clean, minimalistic cement skim finish, while Chengal wood, a strong locally sourced timber adds warmth and texture to the outdoor deck and screens.

Maximising a Compact Site:
Situated on a small bungalow plot in a dense township and surrounded by neighbouring residences, Interlace House takes a unique approach. While many homes in similar settings build excessively for additional floor space, this design uses the “interlace” concept to generate a sense of openness by intertwining the volumes horizontally. This allows the home to embrace natural light and ventilation while maintaining privacy without increasing mass.

Blending Privacy and Openness:
Interlace House effortlessly combines privacy and openness. The master bathroom opens to a double-volume courtyard, offering serene views without the need for enclosed walls. The open-plan ground floor revolves around a central stairwell, which serves as both an architectural focal point and a perfect space for the dogs to play. Hidden utility spaces, storage, and maid’s quarters maintain the clean, spacious aesthetic of the main living areas.

Sustainability at the Core:
Sustainability is integral to the design. The interwoven blocks promote cross ventilation, reducing reliance on air conditioning. The double-volume central stairwell acts as a light well, minimising the need for artificial lighting during the day. Solar panels on the metal roof further reduce the home’s environmental footprint by generating renewable energy. Locally sourced materials and energy-efficient construction methods bolster the house’s environmental performance.

Elevating Everyday Living:
The wet kitchen, located next to an inner garden, transforms daily tasks into moments of serenity by blending practicality with nature. Cooking becomes an immersive experience, surrounded by greenery and the playful energy of pets. This integration of daily activities with natural surroundings fosters a sense of balance and tranquility.

A Dynamic Space for Both Humans and Pets:
Interlace House is designed to evolve with its inhabitants. The inner garden, complete with a pond, provides a peaceful retreat for the owners and a playful haven for their pets. Strategically placed dog houses and an adjacent courtyard offer spaces for relaxation and play, creating a harmonious living environment.

Interlace House exemplifies a thoughtful, sustainable approach to modern living, enhancing everyday experiences through inclusive design.
